The foundation stone was laid down by PM Narendra Modi in 2021. It is constructed in two phases; in the first phase, this expressway will connect Meerut to the Prayagraj district in UP, and in the second phase, there will be an expansion on the sides of the expressway.

The primary objective of the Ganga Expressway is to boost economic development by facilitating faster and more efficient transportation. It aims to reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj to around 10 hours, compared to the much longer durations currently required via existing routes.

The expressway will pass through various significant districts of UP like Hapur, Amroha, Bulandshahr, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Pratapgarh, thus integrating numerous local economies and fostering regional development. The speed limit for this expressway is 120km/hr.

Ganga Expressway design is based on the DBFOT (Design Build Finance Operate Transfer) model and is maintained by UPEIDA (Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority). This project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 before Kumbh Mela 2025. The Ganga Expressway costs around 37,350 crore, including land acquisition costs.

This project consists of modern amenities and safety measures. It includes service roads, rest areas, toll plazas, and underpasses to ensure smooth and safe travel.
