The new parliament building is part of the Central Vista project of the Union Government. The Central Vista Master Plan was conceived in September 2019. The Central Vista development or redevelopment plan is a six-year-long infrastructure development project which involves multiple initiatives.
Owing to the old and insufficient infrastructure in the Parliament Building, the parliament had set up a committee to suggest an alternative for the present building. As the present building is over 93 years old, the latest safety measures and infrastructure cannot be ensured in the present premise.
The new parliament building will have an approximate lifespan of 150 years. An earthquake-resistant building, New Parliament will incorporate architectural designs from across India. It will display the culture and sculpture of popular architectural styles prevalent in India.
The capacity of the new parliament building will be 888 in the Lok Sabha and 384 in the Rajya Sabha. In case of a joint session in the New Parliament Building, the Lok Sabha will be able to accommodate 1272 members.
